A washer that clicks once, remains unlocked, and scrolls LId can often be restored by replacing the latch assembly and routing its harness correctly.

Why I did it this way

The lid message reports a failed safety condition, not necessarily a broken lid or hinge. On model GTW680BSJ6WS, the repair focused on the black latch housing beneath the bezel.

What I used

  • Replacement lock kit matched to the model; WH08X37938 was identified
  • Nut driver and screwdriver
  • Small pick or needle-nose pliers
  • Phone camera or labels for harness routing

What I did

  1. I unplugged the washer. Do not diagnose or remove the safety lock with the machine energized.
  2. I opened the console and top. Remove fasteners, support the top, and avoid pulling on attached wiring.
  3. I removed the latch bezel. The trim comes off to expose the black latch housing below.
  4. I documented the harness route. Record every clip and connector before removal.
  5. I removed the old lock. Release connector tabs, remove the mounting fasteners, and lift out the assembly.
  6. I installed and routed the replacement. Seat the lock, connect until latched, and follow the factory harness path so wiring cannot rub or pinch.
  7. I reassembled and tested it. Start a short cycle and confirm latch engagement, error clearance, filling, and normal release. The washer worked after I installed the new lock.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Pulling connectors by the wires
  • Cutting the old harness before the replacement route is understood
  • Testing with the top unsupported
  • Defeating the lid safety to make the washer run

My result

The replacement latch locked normally, the LId message cleared, and the washer started and completed its cycle again.

Know your limits

Stop if the new lock does not clear the error, connectors are heat damaged, or live 120-volt board testing is required.

How to adapt this to your project

Confirm the model number and diagnose the symptom before ordering a compatible lock and harness. Disconnect power, document the existing wire routing and use model-specific service instructions rather than assuming another washer uses identical parts.
