How I Built Roscoe a Window Bed

I built Roscoe an elevated bed by the window, with a comfortable cushion and a shelf underneath.

I built Roscoe his own elevated bed by the window so he has a comfortable place to settle in and watch outside.

What I built

The photos show a raised wooden frame with a cushioned top, four legs and a shelf underneath. One photo shows the wood before its finished appearance; the others show Roscoe enjoying the finished bed by the window.

What I did

I built the window bed and fitted it with a cushion for Roscoe. The finished bed has a light-colored frame and a lower shelf. I will add my actual measurements, materials, fasteners, tools and construction steps as I gather them.

Planning a bed for your pet

Consider your pet's size, a comfortable cushion, a stable base and a height your pet can safely reach. Smooth edges and make sure the structure is secure and supports your pet before use.

Know your limits

If you are unsure about the strength or stability of a raised platform, have a knowledgeable builder help. Consider a low bed or steps if climbing is difficult for your pet.

How to adapt this to your project

Start with your pet's cushion dimensions and allow room for it inside the frame. Choose a height your pet can reach comfortably and a footprint that fits the window area. Design the supports and joints for the expected load and check that the finished bed is stable.
