Removable covers can still shrink, distort, or damage backing when heat is used, especially around down-filled cushions.
Why I did it this way
My sectional had 97 percent polyester and 3 percent nylon fabric with conflicting S and WS references. The conservative approach was a delicate wash followed by no-heat drying.
What I used
- Vacuum and upholstery attachment
- Mild detergent
- Washing machine delicate cycle
- Drying rack or fan
- Optional dryer Air Fluff or no-heat setting
What I did
- I checked the sewn-in label first. Use the tag on the specific furniture, not only a retailer listing. Cleaning-code discrepancies require the more conservative method.
- I removed loose debris. Vacuum seams and photograph how each cover fits.
- I separated the down inserts. Wash only the removable fabric cover unless the manufacturer specifically permits laundering the insert.
- I used a gentle cycle. Wash cold or cool with mild detergent and avoid bleach or fabric softener unless allowed.
- I removed the covers promptly. Do not leave covers balled in the washer.
- I avoided heated drying. Use air drying with a fan or 10 to 15 minutes of Air Fluff with no heat.
- I refitted the covers while barely damp. A barely damp cover can be easier to shape over the cushion, then finish drying with airflow.
What I learned
- Trusting a salesperson over the care tag
- Using a heated dryer
- Washing down inserts like ordinary foam
- Reinstalling while wet enough to trap moisture
My result
The removable covers were cleaned without heated drying, which protected their size, shape, backing, and fit over the down-filled cushions.
Know your limits
Use a professional upholstery cleaner when the tag specifies solvent-only cleaning, colors transfer, backing delaminates, or the cover is not designed for removal.
