How I Rebuilt My Fence and Gates for Roscoe

I measured and replaced the fence boards, built two gates, and added interior wire mesh down to the ground to help keep Roscoe inside.

I rebuilt the fence around our yard with Roscoe in mind. I measured and replaced each board, built two new gates, and added wire mesh on the inside that extends to the ground.

What I used

The project included replacement fence boards, wire mesh, two newly built gates and gate hardware. My photos show the old fence, boards during replacement, and the new gates and mesh. I have not yet recorded the exact lumber sizes, mesh specification, fasteners, tools or cost.

What I did

  1. I measured each fence board and replaced the boards.
  2. I built two new gates for access through the fence.
  3. I added wire mesh to the inside of the fence and extended it to the ground to help keep Roscoe inside.

What I learned

Every opening matters when the fence is meant to contain a dog. Check the fence line, gate latches and ground-level gaps regularly, especially where the yard changes elevation.

Know your limits

Before digging or changing a fence, check utility locations, property lines and local rules. A fence is not a substitute for supervision; choose materials and a height appropriate for your dog and check for sharp wire ends.

How to adapt this to your project

Measure the clear opening between sound posts at the top and bottom, and check whether the ground slopes through the gate's swing. Subtract the hinge, latch and center clearances required by your chosen hardware from the opening; divide the remaining width between the two leaves if they will be equal. Size the frame around those dimensions, keeping it square and adequately braced for its width and weight. Measure each fence span independently; choose mesh openings suited to your dog and check the ground and gate gaps. My dimensions do not determine yours.
